Rurouni Kenshin is the story of a wanderer called Himura Kenshin (with Himura meaning, "of the village," and Kenshin meaning "Sword Heart"). During the Bakumatsu (end of Edo dynasty in Japan), he was known as the Hitokiri Battousai, which meant, "Assassin of Sword-Drawing." Kenshin killed with a single stroke, quick and painless.
He was a member of the Choshu Ishin group, and was a hitokiri for them. Later, he was transferred by Katsura Kogoro to the front to fight against the Shinsen Gumi. After a period, he left the Choshu, and began wandering throughout Japan. He took a vow never to kill again, and replaced his sword with a Sakabatou(reverse-bladed sword) so that he may still use his fighting skills but not to kill. Eventually he wanders into Tokyo where he is confronted by a Kenjutsu master by the name of Kamiya Kaoru, master of Kamiya Kasshin Ryu.
He later saves her, and she asks him to stay with her for a while. But, all of these "colorful characters" keep coming after him, wanting to
bring in a bounty on his head. As he lives in a dojo with Kamiya Kaoru and her apprentice, who is a hot headed, fire tempered, juvenile delinquent. If you like action shows, this ones pretty good, but not that glamourous.

Rurouni Kenshin is the story of a wandering samurai who uses a
sword technique called the Hiten Mitserugi style, one of the most powerful and
complicated techniques in the show. His name is Kenshin Himura but referred to
as Botosai the Man Slayer. As a kid his whole village is murdered, and thats
when he meets his master. His master leaves him with a choice to join him, and
his master leaves the village. He returns to find that Kenshin had buried everyone with
nothing but his hands. Years later during the war kenshin decides to go and
fight.
Ten years later Kenshin finds himself in Tokyo in the Kamiya Kashin Dojo where
he meets Kaoru. Soon after that a man named Sanoske and Yahiko. Kenshin gets
into a crap load of fights with old enemies and some new ones. I don't want to
name them all but here is a few: The Oni Waban Group, Soujiro, Jineh, and
Shishio.
The fight scenes in this anime are excellent, especially the one between
Kenshin and Sito. The animation is some of the best i've seen. I would recommend
this show to any anime fan who likes a good fight. The sucky thing is they only
show it saturday nights on cartoon network.

Summary:
The Rurouni Kenshin series takes place 10 years into the Meiji Era, the peaceful time period after the Bakumatsu Era. An assassin from the Bakumatsu Era named Himura Kenshin, and nicknamed "Battousai" lives as a wanderer, using his sakaba (blunt sword) to keep the peace. The series is rather lengthy anime that contains three OVA's in addition to the anime series itself. The first two OVA's are done in the old style when the series was known as samurai X, quite different from the modern-style anime series most of you will be familiar with. These were titled 'Memory' or 'Trust and Betrayal' (which is my favorite and is depicted in the image to the left) and 'Seisou Hen'. The third OVA uses the anime series style and is entitled 'Meiji Kenkaku Romantan'.
What will you see?
Various weapon fights
Unique villians
Dramatical events
Mild comedy
A mild romance story

Jack | 07-29-2003 13:39 [E-Mail,Site] | Where is there not a good thing about Rurouni Kenshin. Every thing he does is amazing. His sword style is the coolest sword style. Rurouni Kenshin is the best show in the world. | Akeda | 07-28-2003 11:15 [E-Mail,Site] | Rurouni Kenshin is one of the greatest anime series i have seen not all just fighting but love passion friendship and many other variables. He is a man always dealing with his past and all the killing hes done having many times where hes not only fighting an opponent but himself to keep from killing them. A few of his more colorful friends are Miss Kouru Sanoske Yaheko and many more. All in all i recomend that anyone remotely intrested in the ancient time of japan with samuri and the begining of there fall should really watch this series. | Richard | 07-27-2003 20:47 [E-Mail,Site] | Rurouni Kenshin is one the best anime show i've everseen, but i wonder what happened w/ Samurai X and how the show w/ the uncut parts. now it kinda sucks cause it moved to Saturday. I want to see it every day!!! | Kyle | 07-27-2003 03:34 [E-Mail,Site] | I like the reviews on Rurouni Kenshin it is a good review of the series it is very a cool show but to better under stand Rurouni Kenshin the series you should watch Samara X. It tells about the life Rurouni Kenshin as a manslayer it's a little bloody but all in all a good series. | Malice | 07-27-2003 00:21 [E-Mail,Site] | I just finished the last episode of seisohen, the long episodes after Rurouni Kenshin. All I have to say is that I enjoy the episodes that came before the TV show immensely and then felt let down when Shinta(Kenshin) stopped killing people. It's a great story overall and it's a good lesson/message/whatever, but I still can't shake the feeling that the story was better when Shinta was the wandering(mentally) master Hitokiri that was unsure about the direction his life would take. I know many people who disagree with me, but that's my opinion.-9 1/2 outta 10 not including the TV series, 7 outta 10 including |
